Tapping into the Power of FeedBurner

FeedBurner offers many options for optimizing your RSS feed. But do not stop at simply burning your feed, take advantage of the many ways you can tap into the power of FeedBurner - for free!

First, get an account with FeedBurner.com and burn your feed if you haven’t already. All you need to do to burn your feed is the URL of the feed. If you are using WordPress, the URL to your feed is “http://www.yourdomainname.com/feed/.” FeedBurner provides good documentation to help you with this process.

Once you have burned your feed, you should make the “feed-burned” version of your feed available on your site- clearly visible to your visitors. Use the “Chicklet Chooser” option below to do this.

Go to your FeedBurner account, and click on “My Feeds.” Click on the feed you want to work on. You should see the following tabs:

FeedBurner

From the Optimize menu, activate the following services:

Browser Friendly
Smart Feed
FeedFlare

These services will help get your feed maximum exposure in the social Web and will make subscribing to the feed much easier.

Activate Link Splicer if you save a lot of links to a social bookmarking site like del.icio.us.

Add your logo to your feed with Feed Image Burner.

Activate the Event Feed if you have an Upcoming.org account, or use Google Calendar to keep track of upcoming events.

From the Publicize menu:

Headline Animators: These can be great for advertising your feed as a banner on other sites and in emails, or for advertising on FeedBurner feed networks or channels. You can create any number of banners or email signatures.

BuzzBoost: Use this to show your feed on other sites - you can even combine more than one feed using this feature. This works great for cross-promoting your feeds if you have multiple Web sites.

Email Subscriptions: You can design custom emails of your feed entries along with a form to place on your site for users to subscribe through.

PingShot: This should be one of the first things you do once you burn your feed. FeedBurner will automatically ping (notify) some of the most important feed services each time you update your feed.

FeedCount: Once you have enough feed subscriptions to be proud of, add a feed count chicklet to show it off.

Chicklet Chooser offers you some nice ways to display your feed on your site. You should do this as soon as you burn your feed, so you make it available to your site visitors right away.
