You may be losing out on opportunities to improve the reach of your RSS feed or blog. These optimization tips can help:

Burn your feed to FeedBurner.com. Take advantage of the optimization and analytics features they offer.

Offer alternate ways for readers to subscribe to your feed. Use FeedBurner tools like email subscriptions and subscription buttons like the ones on AddtoAny.com to offer more choices for your readers.

Add your feed to as many feed directories as you can. Don’t assume that just because a service is being pinged (notified) about your posts, that your feed is listed in their directory. Start by claiming your blog at Technorati.com. Then use the toprankblog blog directory list to find more.

Import your feed into your social networking sites. Facebook allows you to import RSS feeds into your profile and offers applications for you to import feeds into Facebook pages. LinkedIn offers an application to include your feed in your profile. And you can use a tool like HootSuite.com to import your feed into your Twitter account.

Create a lifestream or social page. Start an account with a lifestreaming service like FriendFeed or create a page on a social site like Squidoo. Import your feed into your new accounts along with relevant information from your other Social Web accounts.

Though these tips will help improve the reach of your RSS feed or blog, the best way to get more subscribers is to regularly generate as much quality and on-topic content as you can.

FeedBurner offers many options for optimizing your RSS feed. But do not stop at simply burning your feed, take advantage of the many ways you can tap into the power of FeedBurner – for free!

First, get an account with FeedBurner.com and burn your feed if you haven’t already. All you need to do to burn your feed is the URL of the feed. If you are using WordPress, the URL to your feed is “http://www.yourdomainname.com/feed/.” FeedBurner provides good documentation to help you with this process.

Once you have burned your feed, you should make the “feed-burned” version of your feed available on your site- clearly visible to your visitors. Use the “Chicklet Chooser” option below to do this.

Go to your FeedBurner account, and click on “My Feeds.” Click on the feed you want to work on. You should see the following tabs:

From the Optimize menu, activate the following services:

Browser Friendly
Smart Feed
FeedFlare

These services will help get your feed maximum exposure in the social Web and will make subscribing to the feed much easier.

Activate Link Splicer if you save a lot of links to a social bookmarking site like del.icio.us.

Add your logo to your feed with Feed Image Burner.

Activate the Event Feed if you have an Upcoming.org account, or use Google Calendar to keep track of upcoming events.

From the Publicize menu:

Headline Animators: These can be great for advertising your feed as a banner on other sites and in emails, or for advertising on FeedBurner feed networks or channels. You can create any number of banners or email signatures.

BuzzBoost: Use this to show your feed on other sites – you can even combine more than one feed using this feature. This works great for cross-promoting your feeds if you have multiple Web sites.

Email Subscriptions: You can design custom emails of your feed entries along with a form to place on your site for users to subscribe through.

PingShot: This should be one of the first things you do once you burn your feed. FeedBurner will automatically ping (notify) some of the most important feed services each time you update your feed.

FeedCount: Once you have enough feed subscriptions to be proud of, add a feed count chicklet to show it off.

Chicklet Chooser offers you some nice ways to display your feed on your site. You should do this as soon as you burn your feed, so you make it available to your site visitors right away.

Social Media Power is not affiliated with FeedBurner, and we simply offer this information as a courtesy to our readers.

Have fun, and get empowered!

And, don’t forget, we want to hear your success stories, so please let us know how you have become empowered.
